Thousands of fishermen in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau were ecstatic with their huge haul of fish, after a month at sea, even though they returned home a day or two late to celebrate Tet Lunar New Year with their families.

Tu Van Hien, deputy head of the People’s Committee of Song Doc Town in Tran Van Thoi District, said hundreds of fishing vessels had landed at the Song Doc seaport on the second and third day of Lunar New Year, bringing in a joyful lot of fishermen who raked in good profits from their huge haul of fish and shrimps.
As prices of aqua-products have hiked of late, fishermen enjoyed higher profits. Each vessel is said to have raked in profits of about VND50 million-VND100 million (US$4,796).
According to the fishermen, there was an abundance of shrimp and fish in the sea during the first days of Tet Lunar New Year. They believe too that if they catch a lot of fish during the first days of Lunar New Year, the rest of the year is profitable as well.
On the third day of Tet Lunar New Year (January 25), fishermen belonging to the Fishery Association of Duc Pho District in the central province of Quang Ngai organized a get-together to celebrate the first haul of the season.
