Border guards of Phu Hoi station and police of the drug and criminal prevention force of An Giang Province discovered a boat from Cambodia into Vietnam through Phu Hoi Commune in An Phu District carrying 30 pigs totally weighing 1.8 tons worth VND90 million (US$ 3,878).
Most of the pigs are weak and pale.
Two men including Le Van Hai in An Phu District and Le Van Gieng in Ta Kheo District in Cambodia said that they were hired by a Vietnamese man named Hiep, who paid them VND500,000 each to transport pigs into An Giang.
Border guards seized all the pigs because of unclear origin and destroyed all.
According to the Department of Husbandry and Animal Health in the Mekong delta, prices of pigs are fluctuating from VND 60,000- VND63,000 per kilogram but the supply is dwindling while price of pigs in Cambodia is around VND10,000; therefore, relevant agencies keep alert on smuggled pigs through border gates from now to the Lunar New Year when the demand of pork increases.
