240,000 New PRs, Citizens Likely to Be Added to Singapore's Population

200,000 new Permanent Residents and 40,000 new citizens are likely to be added to Singapore's population over the next five years.

This would be possible as long as Singapore gets the same numbers of new PRs and citizens as in the last five years.

That's the projection by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng, in a written reply to a question by Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim.

Many of these immigrants over the years were employment pass holders who are skilled professionals or managers working in the country's strategic economic sectors like the finance, biomedical sciences and creative industries.

Mr Wong added that Singapore will adjust its requirements accordingly to ensure new PRs and citizens fit the profile, as the nature and needs of the economy changes.

He reiterated that the Government will monitor the population growth closely to ensure that the quality of life for Singaporeans will not be compromised as the population grows.
