Electric bicycle drivers must register number plates or else they will be fined under a Ministry of Public Security regulation that took effect on June 1.

Traffic wardens handled and fined many electric bicycle drivers who did not wear helmets or jumped the red light or turned left on red light.

However Colonel Dao Vinh Thang, head of the Road and Railway Transport Police Bureau of Hanoi Police, said the traffic police in Hanoi not yet fined electricity bicycle drivers without registered number plates but raised people’s awareness of the regulation.

When people understand the regulation for their benefit they will willingly finish the registration, he said.

After a long period, police will issue fines to unregistered battery-powered motorbike drivers, he added.
