Police in Ho Chi Minh City on March 2 arrested a 31-year-old man for transporting goods across the border, without any documents or an import licence.
Le Dai Nghia was arrested for illegally transporting goods across the border. According to his statement, he had been asked by Nguyen Thi Tai, who lives in the US, for help in selling milk and cosmetic products in Vietnam as she did not have an import licence. She asked Nghia to prepare some documents to sell these products, which she would ship from the US.
Nghia asked a company that imported gypsum and concrete-mixers to accommodate his request and issue valid import papers for milk and cosmetic products to which the company refused.
Nonetheless Nghia continued to use the company documents, stating that gypsum was being imported whereas all the while he was importing milk and cosmetic products.
All products were put inside freight containers and brought into Vietnam, since 2011.
By using this ruse, Nghia misappropriated the company documents to import 10-15 freight containers of products from Lai, without paying any tax.
On November 23, 2011, police discovered a freight container containing 76,082 bottles of Glucerna, Ensure and many kinds of cosmetics at a warehouse in Ba Diem Commune of Hoc Mon District.
In addition, police also detected 82,000 bottles of various brands of milk and cosmetic products at the warehouse. Value of the goods were estimated to be VND3 billion (US$150,000).
