Of the 5,000 people who completed out-of-work documentation, 1,997 applied for unemployment pay, though only 550 people were deemed eligible.

Ho Chi Minh City has seen the greatest number of jobs lost since January 1 this year, accounting for 50 percent of registered joblessness nationwide, with over 2,500 people claiming recent unemployment.

As of January 27 in HCMC, 39 people were approved to receive unemployment allowances by the city Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said Deputy Director of the department Nguyen Van Xe.

Under the new unemployment insurance regulations, individuals who lose their jobs must immediately declare their unemployment status via official documentation.

After declaring their status, potential unemployment pay beneficiaries have seven days to submit documentation including the reason for leaving work, a copy of their employment contract, and social insurance information.

Within 15 days of receipt of the paperwork, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will decide whether to grant unemployment benefits. If the individual receives approval, they will receive their first pay on the 16th of the month.
