Over 1,000 workers went on strike at Taiwanese Formosa Garment and Textile Company, My Xuan Industrial Park to oppose irrational regulations by the company in Tan Thanh district, the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on June 11.
According to the workers, in labor contracts with the company their working time is from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and after having an hour rest for lunch, they continue working at 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
However, the company has forced them to work overtime until 6:30 p.m. without a light meal or rest during the overtime causing many workers fainted.
In addition, the company has not kept its words to reward workers with good technical skills VND300,000 a month and those at upper middle level VND200,000 after three months of recruitments.
It has paid only VND10,000 for a lunch ration. Instead of reminding, Formosa managers have thrown piles of clothes in the faces of those working slowly or erroneous.
Sai Gon Giai Phong reporters have tried but failed to meet the company’s leaders for more information. According to their records, the strike has taken place moderately without quarrels, fighting or devastation.
Formosa has seen two strikes for the last three months with the attendance of thousands of workers.
Talking on the phone, Mr. Nguyen Duc Y who is chairman of the Trade Union of Industrial Parks in Ba Ria-Vung Tau said that the union and other authorized agencies in the province have been working with the company on the strike on June 11.
