The locals in typhoon-hit areas receive gifts donated by organizations nationwide.

The Vietnam Red Cross took more than VND14 billion worth of donated household goods to typhoon-affected areas yesterday afternoon.

Nguyen Chi Tuyen, the organization’s deputy secretary-general, said the relief aid included 10 tons of new clothes provided by South Korea’s Red Cross and 2,000 barrels of household commodities.

The household goods were allocated to families in Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Vinh Long, Binh Thuan and Tra Vinh while the clothes were distributed throughout the 26 southern provinces and cities.

The Vietnam Railway Corporation transported the goods free of charge.

Prior to yesterday’s deliveries, the Vietnam Red Cross had sent teams to five of the most battered areas along the southern coast: Phu Quy Island off Binh Thuan, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ben Tre, Tien Giang and Vinh Long.

On the same day, Japanese oil and gas service company Modec handed USD25,000 to the Ba Ria-Vung Tau chapter of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Committee to help the province’s victims of Typhoon Durian.

Another corporate benefactor was the Russian oil and gas company Zarubezheff, which gave USD1,000 for the people of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the province hardest-hit by the typhoon.

To date, the Fatherland Front Committee in Ba Ria-Vung Tau has received more than VND8.6 billion and US$47,300 to help the storm’s victims.

Also yesterday, Mr. Christian, Global Marketing Manager of the Holcim Group, delivered 50 tons of cement to the owners of damaged houses in the province.
