The Finance Ministry has proposed the Government to allow salaries and bonuses for 2011 that are paid this January to be exempted from personal income tax, Finance Deputy Minister Do Hoang Anh Tuan said Thursday.
Over the weekend, tens of thousands of workers in the southern province of Binh Duong sent complaints to authorities about the fact that their Tet (Lunar New Year) bonuses had to bear personal income tax.
A fact is the salaries and bonuses are for 2011, not 2012.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly made a resolution in August last year that personal income tax on such income be exempted from August 1 to December 31, 2011.
Finance Deputy Minister Do Hoang Anh Tuan added that the ministry would tell tax offices in localities about the proposal, and would work out specific guidelines.
On Thursday afternoon, Ms. Tong Thi Minh, chief of the Labor Department of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, told Sai Gon Giai Phong that the ministry had already been aware of that fact and was working with taxmen on not levying personal income tax on salaries and bonuses for 2011 that are paid this January.
