The death of a three-month-old baby in the Central Province of Quang Tri is due to pneumonia and not from Quinvaxem vaccine, said Tran Dac Phu, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health.

After being vaccinated with a made-in-South Korea Quinvaxem vaccine on November 5, three-month-old Ho Van Chinh from Huong Hoa District in Quang Tri Province developed fever and refused to breastfeed.

The child was hospitalized in the district hospital and later transferred to the General Hospital where doctors diagnosed severe pneumonia.

Although medical workers tried their best to save the child, his condition worsened and he died on November 10.

Doctors at the General Hospital announced that the baby had been suffering from respiratory failure due to pneumonia caused by bacteria.

Forensic examinations showed that the baby had suffered severe pneumonia, one of the leading causes of deaths among infants below one year of age.

Quinvaxem vaccine is used against five common fatal childhood diseases, namely, diphtheria (D), tetanus (T), pertussis (P), whooping cough, hepatitis B (HepB), and Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib).
