A high-risk warning for H7N9, Avian Flu, has been posted by the Ministry of Health after the death of the man in Binh Phuoc Province on January 21.

The health sector warns to cook all poultry thoroughly and avoid eating meat of unknown origin. Personal hygienic practices are also emphasized.

The cold weather is favorable to bird flu outbreaks, said Dr. Tran Dac Phu, head of Preventive Medicine Department in the Ministry of Health.  The festive season calls for increased demand for poultry consumption which causes a faster spread for the virus.

The virus caused the death of a 52-year-old man after eating infected waterfowl in the southern province of Binh Phuoc’s Bu Dang District.  This is the first reported fatality of the virus in Vietnam.
