11.1 percent of Vietnamese women get married before 18: survey

The General Statistics Office (GSO) and UNICEF today held a workshop to announce MICS in Hanoi.

The organizers have carried out a survey over 10,200 households, they have contacted over 10,000 households and interviewed 9,979 family members, accounting for 99.6 percent.

Nguyen Dinh Chung Deputy head of the Bureau of Society and Environment Statistic under GSO said that in 5 recent years, the mortality rate of  children under 1 month old accounts for 12 per thousand meanwhile the mortality rate of children below 5 year old is 10 per thousand; accordingly most of children die before 1 year old.

According to report, the percentage of infants under six months of age who are exclusively breastfed is 24.3 percent. The report also showed that only 59 percent of babies were fed with various kinds of food.

The rate of children receiving enough vaccination before 1 year old is 75.5 percent. The rate of infants injected hepatitis B is lowest and next is the rate of babies injected vaccine against measles.

According to the survey, around 68 percent of Vietnamese children aged from 1 to 14 year old suffer mental or physical punishment done by family members one month before the survey conducted.

Youssouf Abdel-Jelil said at the workshop that he hoped the survey can help Vietnamese policy-makers have necessary information to target proper policies  for women and children’s growth.
