Vaccinations advised to combat measles

The health sector will be providing measles injections due to the reoccurrence of the disease. 

The sector will be giving free measles and rubella shots to children under 2 years old until August 2014.

The National Expanded Program on Immunizations states that children should get shots at nine-months old and 18 months old.

The country experienced 1,048 cases of measles in 2013, according to the Department of Preventative Medicine. Over 240 cases in 24 provinces were recorded in January 2014. 

Most of the cases occurred in Northern provinces Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Yen Bai. 

Three children have deceased from the disease this year. Nearly 80 percent of infected children did not receive vaccinations prior to infection.
