Sport-related products need closer link with intellectual property rights

A strong commercial relationship with intellectual property rights (IP) is expected to guarantee the economic value of any sport-related product, commented Mr. Dinh Huu Phi, Head of the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP), in the event to celebrate the Intellectual Property Day on April 26 in Vietnam, held by NOIP, the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) Department of Science and Technology, and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of HCMC.

This year’s Intellectual Property Day, themed ‘Going for Gold: IP and Sports’, aims at raising the awareness of the public as well as businesses about new aspects on applying IP regulations into sports product trading. This is hoped to help related enterprises, organizations, and individuals to achieve more development and creativity.

At the moment, in Vietnam, there are 1,897 businesses registering 2,622 trade marks in the field of sports. Yet in the last 10 years, the number of inventions related to sports has been quite limited.

This is certainly a great chance for enterprises to introduce their own sports equipment in the market, for sports people to increase their income via sponsorship contracts with renowned brand names, or for the public to enjoy sports events easily.

According to Mr. Pham Cong Tac, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, the relationship between IP and sports is clearly shown in smart use of inventions and designs to develop appropriate technologies, materials, equipment, training methods in order for sports people to improve their performance and attract more fans globally.

The Ministry of Science and Technology is trying its best to introduce the most suitable mechanisms for sufficient IP protection and innovation activities, said Mr. Tac.
