At the inaugural ceremony of its second plant in Vietnam on March 25, Samsung announced its plan to make Vietnam one of its biggest production bases.
Samsung broke ground for its second facility in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, around 70km from Hanoi, which will produce handsets and spare parts.
This is expected to be the South Korean company’s largest handset plant in the world. Samsung has seen spectacular growth since it first established five years ago.
The Thai Nguyen plant is expected to produce more than 100 million mobile phones and one million digital cameras in the future.
As per schedule, it will finish construction by October and officially go into production the following month. The complex is expected to generate tens of thousands of jobs for locals in years to come.
Once operational, the factory will produce Samsung’s flagship products such as the Galaxy S3, S4, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was present at the ceremony and expressed his hope that investment cooperation between Vietnam and Samsung would further boost the strategic partnership between Vietnam and South Korea. He hoped the project will pave the way for other foreign investments into Vietnam in the future.
Samsung’s first plant is located in Bac Ninh Province in northern Vietnam. The plant with around 30,000 workers has produced more than 100 million products and touched $12.7 billion export turnover in 2012, according to Nguyen Van Dao, deputy CEO of Samsung Vietnam.
