At a meeting on May 7, the Steering Committee for Avian Flu Prevention and Control and the Department of Animal Health, informed that Avian Flu infection had been successfully curbed in the northern provinces of Thanh Hoa, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Bac Ninh and the central province of Ha Tinh.
The disease has already killed 14,000 swallows in the above provinces. Health watchdogs also took samples of swallows from a bird breeding house in Phan Rang-Thap Cham City in the central province of Ninh Thuan and all tested positive for the virus.
According to the department, rainy weather is conducive for bird flu virus to flourish and illegal transport and sale of unsafe poultry provides high risk of outbreak of bird flu in all corners of the country.
On the same day, Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, director of the Centre of Preventive Medicine in District 11, Ho Chi Minh city reported the death of a 72-year-old man from A/H1N1. Medical workers have sprayed chemicals to disinfect the man’s house and premises and are closely supervising all those who had direct contact with the old man. Among them, a 24-year-old man is experiencing fever and being treated at the Tropical Disease Hospital.
Before he fell ill, the 72-year-old man said he had gone on a tour of Can Gio and visited a bird breeding center. The Health Watchdog is now closely monitoring that area.
