Amid the risk of a shortage of pork, authorities and enterprises have put forward several solutions to prevent hike in pork prices. One of the solutions is to encourage consumers and food processing enterprises to increase using frozen pork or other food to replace fresh pork.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, the amount of essential goods prepared has risen by 14.6-17.3 percent compared to the plan entrusted by the city and increased by 21-28 percent compared to the amount of goods prepared for last lunar New Year. Total value of goods that enterprises have prepared and stockpiled for two festive months is more than VND19.02 trillion, an increase of VND602.5 billion, or 3.27 percent, over total capital prepared for last lunar New Year. Of which, total value of goods for the price stabilization program is more than VND7.24 trillion.

For the peak month of Tet holidays from December 26 to January 24, total value of goods prepared by enterprises will be more than VND10.22 trillion with the value of subsidized goods of VND4.08 trillion. Many goods groups are prepared in large quantity, controlling for 20-53.2 percent of market demand, including poultry meat (53.2 percent), poultry egg (48.6 percent), processed food (28.1 percent), cattle meat (21 percent), cooking oil (27.5 percent) and rice (31.5 percent).

However, at the meeting with key enterprises of the city to deploy the plan to supply food and essential foodstuffs in the city during Tet holidays on November 20, the Department of Industry and Trade ordered enterprises to continue to adjust pork products, poultry meat, poultry eggs and processed food with an increase of 10-30 percent compared to the aforesaid plan so as to lessen pressure on pork supply.

Responding to this order, enterprises affirmed that the current situation is rather favorable for increasing poultry flock as the price of animal feed has been stable since the beginning of this year. On the other hand, there was no epidemic so it is easy to increase total poultry flock.

According to Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Ha, director of San Ha Company, breeding process of Vietnamese chicken is from two to three months while breeding process for industrial chickens is much shorter, of around 35 days. Therefore, the amount of poultry meat will definite enough for the upcoming lunar New Year. The company will be able to stockpile 30 percent higher of poultry meat as required by the Department of Industry and Trade.

Ba Huan Company has also prepared 27.5 million chicken eggs, more than 17 million duck eggs, 750 tons of chicken and 102 tons of processed food for Tet holidays, an increase of more than 10 percent compared to the plan that it registered with the Department of Industry and Trade.

Besides supplying a large amount of poultry meat, key enterprises in the city also increased importing frozen pork and producing products made from pork and poultry eggs in order to provide consumers with more options during festive season. This is the first year the company has released chicken Chinese sausage and braised chicken products to alternate pork.

Vissan said that it has prepared more than 7,500 tons of goods, worth VND800 billion, including 2,500 tons of fresh pork and beef, an increase of 5 percent over the same period last year, and 5,000 tons of processed food, an increase of 17 percent over last year. According to the representative of Vissan, the company had prepared materials since June this year in order to ensure goods supply during Tet holidays with high quality, food safety and steady prices.

Of which, Vissan imported 2,500 tons of frozen pork for production of processed food to replace domestic pork supply. The company has produced various types of food for the festive season. At the same time, it has also produced packed frozen pork to meet the demand when the prices of fresh pork fluctuate.

Similarly, Saigon Food Company started production for Tet holidays quite early with more than 2,000 tons of finished products, an increase of more than 33 percent in comparison with last lunar New Year, with a growth goal of 25 percent in domestic market this lunar New Year.

Other brands have also released various products made from seafood and poultry meat.

Ms. Nguyen Minh Hanh, a resident in Thu Duc District, said that there are lots of options of food from fresh to processed at supermarkets and convenience stores. Her family’s demand for pork is not high as there are other food to replace pork in her family’s daily diet.

Up to now, frozen and processed food products of domestic enterprises have been taking the upper hand, accounting for more than 95 percent of market share. With more than 10,000 kinds of products of around 500 suppliers, according to representatives of supermarkets, consumers will have more options when shopping at supermarkets.
