The price of tra catfish rose to VND16,200-16,500 a kilogram in Mekong Delta on January 27, the highest levels since 2008, ensuring farmers make a large profit.

But most farmers are not selling, preferring to wait for prices to rise even further.

Nguyen Van Dao, director of Go Dang Seafood Co., a leading seafood processor in Tien Giang Province, said many plants are facing a shortage of raw fish as a result.

Supply is, however, expected to rise from April.

Duong Ngoc Minh, head of Management Board for Catfish Export to Russia, said the demand for the catfish in Russia, Poland, Germany, Spain, and Brazil has risen by 30 percent year on year.

Tra is currently exported at US$2.8 a kilogram.
