The flood submerged the houses and rescue and relief operations were underway in affected locations, said director of the department Daw Phyu Lei Lei Tun.
Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement is also coordinating with the region and state governments to distribute rice and other aid to the flood victims.
During the monsoon season from June to September, flash floods and landslides occur frequently in Myanmar, accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds, especially in hilly areas and low-lying areas.
The country is listed among countries most affected by severe climate. In 2015, more than 100 people were killed and hundreds of thousands others had to evacuate because of flooding.
