Seafood trade surplus exceeds US$5 billion

Vietnam’s agricultural sector gained a trade surplus of US$8.2 billion in the first 11 months this year, of these US$5 billion came from seafood industry, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam at a meeting in Hanoi on December 4.

He was speaking at the first meeting of the Steering Committee for Seafood Disease Prevention, which has recently been established to control over seafood farming and processing safety and increase export values.

Seafood import turnover was recorded at only US$1 billion of materials for processing, excluding feed.

The total seafood export import turnover has reached US$7.2 billion so far and is likely to hit US$7.8 billion this year.

With this growth momentum, the number is expected to hit US$8 billion next year in accordance with the Government’s seafood development strategy by 2020, said Dep. Minister Tam.
