Director of the department Bui Xuan Cuong yesterday said that Truong Son street is the only entrance road to the airport, so traffic jam has regularly occurred in the area.
Therefore, the agency has proposed the Ministry of Transport to open more entrances from Thong Nhat street in Go Vap district or some other positions in Truong Chinh and Pham Van Bach streets in Tan Binh district, Tan Son and Quang Trung streets in Go Vap.
At present, the city is listening to scientists’ opinions to seek the most feasible planning measure in and outside the airport. They will give opinions about directions which the city should open new gateways to the airport to conveniently connect with existing terminals.
Under a plan approved by the ministry previously, a new gateway to Tan Son Nhat Airport will be opened in Hoang Hoa Tham street, Tan Binh district. Still the agency said that the street was connected with many other streets and severely overloaded. It would be unfeasible to open a gateway there.
According to Mr. Cuong, many defense land plots have not been handed over for HCMC to implement projects to ease traffic jam in Tan Son Nhat Airport area. The Department of Transport has proposed the Ministry of Defense to ask relevant sides to soon hand over these land plots.
Statistics by the Transport Department show that over 30,000 vehicles are travelling to and from Tan Son Nhat Airport a day. Of the number, 22,000 are automobiles and 7,000 are motorbikes excluding vehicles of over 10,000 people working at the airport.
