For more than ten days, flood water pouring from upstream in the Mekong Delta Province of An Giang has exceeded the warning level, dividing many roads. Children in flood-hit areas struggle to go to schools; therefore, to help children get to school on time and safely, the authority in An Phu District have sent men to pick up students every day.
This year’s flood season in the Mekong Delta has arrived one month later than last year, causing saltwater intrusion in the downstream and affecting local people’s life.
During recent days, the water level in the Riverhead of the Mekong River is rising but it remains at a low level. According to forecasts of hydro-meteorological centers, the flood will not be high this year and may reach its peak at the end of September. However, the craft villages in the Mekong Delta have started to wait for floods.
Cua Dai beach dyke project stretching from Sunrise hotel and Fusion Alya in the central province of Quang Nam’s Hoian City is planned to put into use on September 30 however it has just been implemented 40 percent of its progress up now, while the rainy season is approaching.
The General Department of Irrigation under Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development sent its dispatch to the departments of agriculture & rural development in the Mekong Delta provinces and cities asking to deal actively with the flooding after the Sepien-Senamnol hydropower dam of Laos was collapsed.
Floodwater has been raising slowly but at high level, threatening rice and vegetable crops in the Mekong Delta. Therefore local authorities and farmers have been struggling to protect their crops by fortifying dykes and harvesting young rice.
Water from the Mekong River has been flowing to the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam where residents are waiting for the annual flooding season to earn their livelihood and push back salt intrusion.
