According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the past month, some traders have been purchasing huge quantities of fresh shrimps in Vietnam every day and transporting by road to China.
Earlier, traders only bought size-80 shrimps, but now they are also buying size-150 shrimps. Such immoderate purchasing of shrimps has increased the risk of uncontrolled quality of shrimps, especially with chemical residues that can affect efforts of businesses and the Government to control antibiotic and other chemical residues in shrimps.
Confronted with this situation, the Directorate of Fisheries has sent an alert to coastal provinces, cautioning farmers against such dubious traders and has also asked local authorities to prevent traders from using chemical substances on shrimps which affect the quality and prestige of Vietnamese shrimps.
Moreover, if local authorities find any trader who does not have a business license in Vietnam, they should inform appropriate authorities so as to nab these traders in time.
VASEP also suggested that the Government should impose a duty on fresh shrimps for export, to limit negative impact on the prestige of this trade.
