Personnel, facilities shortage plagues healthcare for elderly

There is a shortage of medical personnel to take care of seniors, Dr. Pham Thang, the director of a geriatric hospital in Hanoi, has said.

Speaking at a meeting to discuss development of a healthcare system for older people in the capital on May 26, he said spending on healthcare for elderly people is 7-10 times higher per person than for young people.

But there is a shortage of doctors and nurses and facilities to treat the former, he admitted.

Meeting participants suggested a long-term strategy to enhance essential social services and provide healthcare services for seniors.
