The Ministry of Transport February 3 officially opened the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong expressway to traffic.

The 61.9-kilometer roadway, the first of its kind in Vietnam, connects HCMC with areas in the Mekong Delta.
It includes a 40-kilometer highway from the Dem Market in HCMC’s Binh Chanh District to the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang’s Chau Thanh District. The additional 21.9 kilometers of road connects the southern hub to other Mekong areas.
In addition, the US$540 million HCMC-Trung Luong expressway links with Highway 62 and road 830 in the southern province of Long An.
The expressway has a maximum speed limit of 100km per hour and a minimum limit of 60km per hour. Thus, only high-speed, motorized vehicles are permitted to drive on the road.
The opening of the expressway ahead of Tet (the lunar New Year) marks an important development in improving road travel to the Mekong Delta while contributing to the reduction of gridlock on Highway 1A.
