A project to build a new abattoir in Binh Minh Commune of Thanh Oai District in Hanoi has been approved by city authorities with investments  of more than VND101 billion (about US$5 million) by the Thanh Oai People’s Committee.

The new abattoir with capacity to process 120 cattle, 120 horses, 480 pigs and 7,200 poultry per day, will be built on an area of 4.6 hectares and will be operational by 2013. It will provide employment to around 100 private butcher households as well as ensure environmental sanitation.

With this project the city will have 13 planned abattoirs, 5 of which are already in business, processing 5 tons of pork and 8.25 tons of poultry per day for the city of Hanoi.

However, the present project could get delayed due to problems like tardiness in providing capital, complicated procedures for construction license and difficulty in choosing a suitable location for building the abattoir. At the moment, city authorities are trying their best to resolve all issues to be able to complete the project by 2013.
