The Vietnamese Interpol Office since 2004 has received requests from foreign police to extradite 583 criminals wanted for various offences, including economic and drug violations, who have been lurking in the country. Most of the criminals legally entered the country via air travel, while a few crossed land borders from Cambodia or China.
The office, under the Ministry of Public Security, said August 10 that most of the extradition requests are from South Korea, Taiwan, the US and England polices.
The situation of runaway outlaws in the world has become complicated. Vietnam has become their haven because of weak social management, especially regarding foreigners, the office said.
Most of the foreign offenders have taken shelter in Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, where many foreigners reside, and in large cities like Hanoi, Hai Phong, Danang and HCMC.
Many of them have applied for jobs while avoiding arrest.
Police officers have captured 35 of the criminals thus far, handing them over to foreign police.
