Several commercial banks raised their US dollar buying prices to an average of VND18,800 per dollar on February 23 in order to attract foreign currencies from customers.
The new price was VND250 higher than the previous day.
Some join-stock banks pushed their buying price to as high as VND19,000 for a US dollar.
Selling prices also reached the highest permissible level of VND19,100 per US dollar.
Meanwhile, the dollar on the unofficial market remained unchanged at around VND19,300 on buying and VND19,500 on selling, which are not much higher than the official rates.
The gap has been narrowed due to the central bank’s decision to devaluing the dong by 3.3 percent against the US dollar on February 11.
